Our before & aftercare guide

Toxins aka Neurotoxins

Before your Botox appointment

There are a few steps you can take to ensure the best results and minimize potential side effects.
Here’s what you should do:

1. Blood-Thinning Medications and Supplements

Avoid taking any blood-thinning medications or supplements at least 1 week before your appointment, as they can increase the risk of bruising and swelling. These include:

- Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Fish oil supplements, Vitamin E supplements, Gingko biloba, St. John’s Wort.

If you're unsure whether any of your medications or supplements could interfere, consult your provider ahead of time.

2. Skip Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol 24 to 48 hours before your Botox treatment. Alcohol can thin the blood and increase the likelihood of bruising or swelling at the injection sites.

3. Avoid Skin Irritation

If you're planning on getting Botox near the face, avoid any aggressive skin treatments such as chemical peels, facials, or laser treatments for at least 1 week before your appointment. These can irritate the skin and increase the risk of complications.

4. No Makeup or Skin Products on the Day of the Appointment

Arrive at your Botox appointment with a clean face, free of makeup, lotions, or oils. This helps prevent any infection risk and ensures that the Botox is injected properly.

5. Don’t Exercise Immediately Before Your Appointment

It’s a good idea to avoid heavy exercise or intense physical activity 24 hours before your Botox appointment. Intense exercise increases blood circulation, which can make you more prone to bruising.

6. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Staying hydrated helps your skin look its best and supports the healing process after the treatment.

7. Relax Before the Appointment

Try to arrive relaxed and calm. Stress can sometimes exacerbate swelling, so it’s helpful to be in a calm state before you get your Botox injections.

8. Inform Your Practitioner of Any Medical Conditions

Let your practitioner know about any medical conditions, medications, or allergies you have, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have neurological conditions like Myasthenia Gravis.

By following these tips, you can help ensure a smooth Botox experience and the best possible results. Always consult with your provider for personalized instructions based on your medical history.

After your Botox appointment

Following the proper aftercare instructions is essential to help ensure the best results and minimize any side effects.
Here's what you should do:

1. Avoid Touching or Rubbing the Treated Area

For at least 24 hours after your Botox treatment, avoid touching, massaging, or rubbing the treated areas. This can help prevent the Botox from spreading to unintended muscles.

2. Stay Upright

For 4 hours following your treatment, try to remain upright (avoid lying down). This helps the Botox settle into the targeted muscles and minimizes the risk of the product migrating to other areas.

3. Avoid Strenuous Activity

For 24 to 48 hours, refrain from intense physical activities, such as vigorous exercise, running, or heavy lifting. Exercise can increase circulation, which may cause the Botox to spread beyond the intended area, leading to unintended side effects or reduced effectiveness.

4. Avoid Heat and Sun Exposure

For 24 to 48 hours, avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and excessive sun exposure. Heat can cause temporary swelling or bruising and may affect the Botox’s effectiveness.

5. Don’t Use Skincare Treatments on the Treated Areas

Avoid using any facial treatments (such as exfoliants, chemical peels, or strong topical treatments) or makeup on the treated areas for the first 24 hours to prevent irritation.

6. Don’t Exercise for 24 hours after treatment

It's generally recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours after receiving neurotoxin injections. Here's why:

Why Avoid Exercise?

Increased Blood Flow: Exercise increases circulation, which could cause the Botox to spread to areas where it wasn’t intended to go, potentially leading to uneven results or complications.

Swelling and Bruising: Strenuous activity may exacerbate any swelling or bruising at the injection sites, which can be more noticeable in the first 24 hours.

Pressure on the Skin: Activities like bending over, lifting weights, or any movement that increases pressure on the treated areas could affect how the Botox settles.

7. Avoid Alcohol

Avoid consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours after your treatment. Alcohol can increase the risk of bruising and swelling at the injection sites.

8. Be Patient

It can take 2 to 3 weeks for the neurotoxin to fully take effect. The results will gradually become visible as the muscle relaxation sets in.

9. Watch for Side Effects

Minor bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site is normal. These usually resolve within a few hours to a couple of days. However, if you experience significant pain, difficulty breathing, or any other unusual symptoms, contact your provider immediately.

10. Follow Up if Necessary

If you notice any asymmetry or are unsure about the results, schedule a follow-up appointment with your provider. They may recommend touch-up injections or adjustments to achieve the desired outcome.

Fillers

Before dermal filler appointment instructions:

To ensure the best results and minimize the risk of complications, there are several things you should avoid before your dermal filler appointment:

If you are taking prescription blood thinners, it is important to ask your prescribing physician if you are abke to stop these medications for 7-10 days before your appointment and at least two days after the dermal filler procedure.

2. Alcohol

Refrain from drinking alcohol at least 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. Alcohol can also thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising or swelling.

3. Smoking

Avoid smoking for at least 24 to 48 hours before the procedure, as smoking can impair healing and affect the results by reducing blood flow to the treated areas.

4. Sun Exposure

Avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning beds for a few days before your appointment, especially if you plan to treat areas like the face. Sunburned or irritated skin can complicate the procedure and recovery.

5. Facials or Skin Treatments

Refrain from getting any facials, chemical peels, or laser treatments at least 1 to 2 weeks before your appointment to reduce the risk of skin irritation or complications.

6. Waxing or Hair Removal

Avoid waxing or intense hair removal in the treatment area for at least 1 to 2 days before the procedure, as sensitive skin can increase the risk of irritation.

7. Makeup

Avoid wearing makeup on the day of your appointment, particularly in the area to be treated. Clean, makeup-free skin is essential for a successful injection.

Special Consideration:

If you have a history of cold sores or herpes simplex virus (HSV), it’s important to let your practitioner know before undergoing dermal filler treatment, particularly if you're having fillers injected into areas around the lips, mouth, or nose. Here's why:

Risk of Reactivation

The trauma caused by needle injections can potentially trigger a reactivation of the herpes simplex virus, especially if you've had outbreaks in the past. This can lead to cold sores or lesions at the injection site, which could interfere with your recovery and the appearance of the treated area.

Preventive Measures

To minimize the risk of a flare-up, your practitioner may recommend one of the following:

  1. Antiviral Medication: You may be prescribed an antiviral medication (such as Valtrex or Acyclovir) before your appointment. Starting antiviral treatment **1-2 days prior** to the procedure and continuing it for a few days afterward can help prevent an outbreak.

  2. Consider Timing: If you're approaching a time when you usually experience an outbreak (for example, during stressful periods, or when you're sick), it may be worth rescheduling your appointment until you're less likely to experience a flare-up.

What to Do If You Have an Active Cold Sore

If you have an active cold sore at the time of your appointment, it's typically best to postpone the treatment until the outbreak has healed. Injecting dermal fillers near or around an active lesion could increase the risk of infection and lead to complications.

It's essential to communicate any history of cold sores or herpes simplex virus to your practitioner so they can take appropriate precautions and adjust your treatment plan accordingly. By following these precautions, you can help reduce the risk of complications and ensure the best results.

After dermal filler appointment instructions:

After your dermal filler appointment, it's important to follow some post-care instructions to ensure the best results, minimize potential side effects, and promote healing. Here's a list of things you should do and avoid:

What to Do After Dermal Filler Treatment:

1. Gently Massage (if advised)

If your practitioner has instructed you to gently massage the area, do so with clean hands. This can help to evenly distribute the filler and prevent any lumps or bumps. Always follow your provider’s specific recommendations.

2. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water after your appointment to help keep your skin hydrated, which can support healing and maintain the filler’s effects.

3. Apply Ice (if needed)

If you experience swelling, applying a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the treated area for 15-20 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling and bruising. Avoid direct contact with ice to prevent skin damage.

4. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers (if necessary)

If you're feeling any mild discomfort or soreness, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol). Avoid ibuprofen or aspirin, as they can increase the risk of bruising.

5. Sleep with Your Head Elevated

For the first night, sleep with your head slightly elevated to reduce swelling. Using extra pillows to prop up your head can help avoid putting pressure on the treated areas.

6. Keep the Treated Area Clean

Avoid touching the treated areas with dirty hands to reduce the risk of infection. Gently cleanse your face with a mild cleanser, and avoid scrubbing or exfoliating the skin for the first few days.

7. Follow Up with Your Practitioner

If your provider recommends a follow-up appointment or check-in, be sure to keep the appointment so they can assess the results and make any necessary adjustments.

What to Avoid After Dermal Filler Treatment:

1. Avoid Touching or Rubbing the Treated Area

Try not to touch, press, or rub the treated area for at least 24 hours to allow the filler to settle in properly.

2. Don’t Apply Makeup Immediately

Avoid wearing makeup on the treated area for at least 24 hours to reduce the risk of infection and irritation. Your skin may be sensitive, so it's best to keep it clean and free of products for the first day.

3. Skip Intense Physical Activity

Avoid vigorous exercise, including running, weightlifting, or high-intensity workouts, for 24 to 48 hours. Strenuous activity can increase blood flow, which could exacerbate swelling, bruising, or discomfort.

4. Avoid Excessive Heat

For the first 48 hours, avoid hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, and long sun exposure. Extreme heat can cause the filler to break down more quickly and increase the risk of swelling.

5. Don’t Drink Alcohol

Refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours after the procedure, as it can increase swelling and the likelihood of bruising.

6. Avoid Dental Work or Facials

For 1 week, try to avoid any dental procedures, facials, or skin treatments near the injection site, as they can irritate the treated area.

7. No Sleeping on Your Face

Try not to sleep directly on the treated areas for the first few nights to avoid putting pressure on the filler. Sleep on your back with your head elevated.

Common Side Effects and What to Expect:

- Swelling and Bruising: It's normal to experience some swelling and bruising after dermal filler treatments, which should subside within a few days to a week.

- Lumps or Bump*: Sometimes small lumps or bumps can form under the skin, but they often resolve on their own as the filler settles.

- Redness and Tenderness: Mild redness and tenderness are common at the injection sites and should improve within a few hours to a couple of days.

If any side effects seem unusual or persistent (like significant pain, infection, or large lumps), reach out to your practitioner for advice.

By following these post-care instructions, you’ll maximize your chances of a smooth recovery and enjoy the best results from your dermal filler treatment. Always consult with your practitioner if you're unsure about any part of the process.

Sculptra

Instructions Before Sculptra treatment:

Before your Sculptra appointment, there are a few important steps you can take to ensure the best results and minimize any potential side effects.

If you are taking prescription blood thinners, it is important to ask your prescribing physician if you are abke to stop these medications for 7-10 days before your appointment and at least two days after the dermal filler procedure.

Consult your healthcare provider before stopping any prescribed medication.

2. Avoid Alcohol

Refrain from drinking alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. Alcohol can thin the blood and increase the likelihood of bruising or swelling at the injection sites.

3. Skip Skin Treatments

If you’ve had any chemical peels, laser treatments, or facials recently, wait at least 1 week before your Sculptra treatment. These treatments can irritate your skin, making it more sensitive and prone to complications.

4. Avoid Smoking

Smoking can hinder collagen production and the healing process, so it’s best to avoid smoking for at least a few days before your treatment.

5. Arrive with Clean Skin

On the day of your appointment, make sure to arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Avoid applying any moisturizers, makeup, or sunscreen to the treatment area to minimize any risk of infection or irritation.

6. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to ensure your skin is hydrated. Hydrated skin can improve the overall effectiveness of the treatment.

7. Discuss Your Medical History

Make sure to inform your provider about any medical conditions, allergies, or medications you’re taking. This helps your practitioner assess whether Sculptra is a safe option for you.

8. Avoid Intense Exercise

Refrain from heavy exercise or vigorous activity for 24 hours before your appointment. Intense physical activity increases circulation, which may lead to more swelling or bruising at the injection sites.

9. Set Realistic Expectations

Remember that Sculptra works gradually over a few months, as it stimulates collagen production beneath the skin. Make sure you discuss your aesthetic goals with your provider to set realistic expectations for the results.

By following these pre-treatment guidelines, you’ll help ensure the best possible experience and optimal results from your Sculptra treatment. Always follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

After Sculptra treatment instructions:

24 Hours After Treatment:

  • Massage the Treated Areas: Gently massage the treated areas in a circular motion for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for the first 5 days after treatment. This helps the product settle evenly.

  • Resume Exercise and Makeup: You can return to your normal exercise routine and apply makeup after 24 hours.

  •  Protect Your Skin from UV Exposure: Avoid prolonged sun exposure until any redness or swelling has resolved. Be sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to the treated areas.

For the Next 1-2 Weeks:

- Firmness in Treated Areas: You may feel some firmness in the treated areas for 1 to 2 weeks. This is normal, and the areas will gradually soften and settle over time.

Additional Care:

- Laser Treatments: Wait at least 2 weeks (or as advised by your provider) before undergoing any laser treatments.

- Pain Relief: If you experience any mild tenderness or discomfort, you can take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed.

- Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress or gel pack (without applying pressure) can help reduce swelling and minimize bruising in the treated areas.

Follow-Up Appointment:

For optimal results, a follow-up appointment is recommended 4 to 6 weeks after your treatment.
